Common First Year Camper Questions

What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?

At our camp, we prioritize safety, individualized attention, and fostering meaningful relationships between campers and staff. We carefully maintain our camper-to-counselor ratio to ensure each camper receives the guidance and support they need. Typically, each cabin is staffed with 3 counselors and 1 Counselor-in-Training (CIT), with a maximum of 12 campers per group. This allows for personalized care and close supervision throughout all activities. Additionally, our counselors are highly trained professionals who are dedicated to creating a fun, safe, and enriching experience for every camper.

How involved is the medical staff?

Our medical staff is highly involved and plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of all campers. We have a dedicated team of qualified nurses and healthcare professionals who are involved and available 24/7. Medical staff are stationed at each activity, and the Med Shed is fully staffed and prepared to handle any emergencies at all times.

Will I be notified in case of an emergency?

Yes, you will be notified immediately in the event of an emergency. Our staff is trained to handle any situation with care and urgency, and we prioritize keeping parents informed. Depending on the nature of the emergency, you will receive a call or message from our camp director or medical staff with all the relevant details. Your child’s safety and well-being are our top priority, and we ensure clear communication throughout any emergency.

Can I contact my child at camp?

Unfortunately, we do not allow direct contact between parents and campers during the camp session. This policy is in place to help children fully immerse themselves in the camp experience, build independence, and engage with their peers without distractions. If there is an urgent matter, our staff will contact you immediately. Rest assured, your child’s well-being is our top priority, and we are always available to address any concerns.

What are the staff's backgrounds?

Our staff members come from a wide range of backgrounds and are carefully selected for their experience, skills, and deep passion for working with children. Many of our counselors have professional experience in education, child development, the medical field, and recreation, ensuring they are well-equipped to create a positive, engaging, and safe environment for every camper. Several of our staff hold degrees or certifications in fields such as early childhood education, psychology, and special education, while others bring valuable expertise in outdoor adventure, arts, sports, and team-building activities. Each staff member is dedicated not only to the physical safety of the campers but also to fostering emotional and social growth through mentorship, guidance, and encouragement. We take great care in ensuring that our team is composed of compassionate, responsible individuals who share our commitment to providing a fun, enriching, and supportive camp experience.

What if my child is homesick?

If your child experiences homesickness, our staff is trained to provide emotional support and help them feel comfortable and engaged. Homesickness is a normal part of the camp experience, and we work closely with each camper to ease their transition and help them build confidence in their independence. Counselors are always available to talk, offer reassurance, and engage children in fun activities to distract and comfort them.

My child is a picky eater. Will they have options to eat?

Yes, we understand that children have different tastes and dietary preferences, and we strive to accommodate a variety of eating habits. Our camp offers a selection of meal options at each meal to ensure that all campers, including picky eaters, have something they enjoy. We work closely with Camp La Vida to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals, and we can accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences. If your child has specific food preferences or restrictions, please let us know in advance, and we will make sure to provide suitable options for them. Our goal is to ensure that every child feels comfortable and well-fed during their time at camp!

How many campers are there?

Typically, we accommodate around 100 campers to ensure an engaging and personalized experience. We maintain a manageable size to ensure that every camper receives the attention and care they deserve while also creating a vibrant, community-focused atmosphere!

What activities are offered?

Our camp offers a wide range of activities designed to engage campers, promote teamwork, and encourage personal growth. See our activities tab for more details!

How will you make sure my child stays safe in the water?

Ensuring your child’s safety in the water is our top priority! We have extensive water safety protocols designed to provide both a fun and secure experience for all campers. This includes the presence of certified lifeguards, swim assessments to match campers with appropriate water activities, clear safety rules and guidelines, and constant supervision around all water areas. With these precautions in place, we are committed to creating a safe, enjoyable environment where your child can confidently enjoy water activities, giving you peace of mind throughout their time at camp!

What are sleeping arrangements like?

Sleeping arrangements at camp are designed to foster a comfortable, safe, and communal environment for all campers. Campers sleep in cabins, where they share bunk beds with others in their age group, promoting a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Each cabin is supervised by trained counselors who are responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and comfort of the campers throughout the night. With this setup, campers can rest easy and be ready for the exciting activities that await them each day.

How do you prevent bullying?

Preventing bullying is a top priority at our camp, and we take proactive measures to foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for all campers. Before camp begins, all campers read and sign a behavioral contract that sets clear expectations for respectful behavior. From the moment they arrive, we emphasize the importance of kindness, respect, and teamwork through activities and discussions. Our camp maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for bullying, and any incidents are addressed swiftly and fairly, with appropriate actions taken to support both the victim and the individual involved. We also encourage open communication, empowering campers to report any concerns to a trusted adult. By building a strong, supportive camp community, we ensure that every camper feels safe, valued, and confident in their experience!

How do I prepare my child for camp?

Preparing your child for camp is an exciting and essential step in ensuring they have a positive and successful experience. Start by talking about camp in a positive light, focusing on the fun activities, new friendships, and memorable adventures they will have. Encourage their independence by letting them practice simple tasks like packing their own bag or organizing their things. Packing together can also make the process more enjoyable and help them feel involved in their preparation. Additionally, take some time to review the camp’s website with them, so they are familiar with the schedule, activities, and any important guidelines, giving them a clear understanding of what to expect. By taking these steps, you’ll help your child feel confident, excited, and ready for the adventure that lies ahead!

Is there anything my child shouldn't bring to camp?

There are several prohibited items to ensure the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all campers. Items such as alcohol, drugs, tobacco products, and weapons are strictly banned, as are electronics like phones (unless being used as a CGM or insulin pump), tablets, and laptops, to encourage outdoor activities and social interaction. Valuables, like expensive jewelry, should also be left at home, as they could get lost or damaged. In addition, flammable items, such as matches, or fireworks, are prohibited to prevent accidents. Campers should avoid bringing pets, food items not approved by the camp, or inappropriate clothing. Following these rules helps create a safe, fun, and focused environment for everyone at camp!

How can I stay updated on my child's camp experience?

We understand how important it is for you to stay connected and updated about your child's camp experience. Throughout the session, we make every effort to keep our social media channels (Facebook & Instagram) updated with photos and highlights of the campers' daily adventures and activities. While we encourage campers to immerse themselves in their camp experience and foster independence, we also strive to provide you with regular updates, so you can stay informed and involved in their journey.
