T1D Management at Camp

How often will my child's blood sugar be checked?

Fingerstick glucose checks are conducted before meals, at bedtime snack, at midnight, and whenever additional monitoring is needed. The whole team actively monitors blood sugar levels to ensure they remain within a safe range. Our medical staff also checks the blood sugar of every camper between midnight and 2 a.m. each night, prioritizing their safety and well-being throughout the night.

Do I need to provide a glucometer, insulin, or pump supplies?
Will there be medical staff available 24/7?

You don’t need to bring a glucometer or insulin, as we have plenty of glucometers, test strips, and a variety of insulin options available. However, because there are different types of pumps, please make sure to send enough pump supplies for your child to change their site every two days, plus one extra change, just to be safe. Additionally, please bring any prescription medications your child may need, along with clear instructions for their use.

Many of our staff members bring years of experience working with children with diabetes and in camp settings. In fact, our core medical team has a combined total of 75 years of diabetes camping experience!

We maintain a camper-to-staff ratio of 1:3, ensuring personalized attention for every camper. A licensed medical team member is assigned to each age group, and our dedicated medical team is available 24/7 to support campers throughout their time at camp, providing care wherever whenever it's needed.

How many trained medical staff are at camp?

Our Medical Director, Dr. Chris Houk, is a pediatric endocrinologist with years of experience leading diabetes camps. Alongside our physicians, we have a dedicated team that includes paramedics, nurses, certified diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. To ensure personalized care, we assign at least one medical team member to each camper group (approximately 10 campers per group).
